This film has been made on the occasion of Mujib Barsha. The production cost of this film is 83 crore rupees. Bangladesh contributed 500 crores of the total amount, and India 33 crores. Arifin Shubo, Nusrat Imroz Tisha, and Zayed Khan took only ৳1 as remuneration for acting in the film. The film’s production was scheduled to begin on March 18, 2020, the day after Bangabandhu’s birth anniversary. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the work of the film got delayed.
Shyam Benegal ensured that most of the actors in the film were from Bangladesh. Auditions were held from January to February 2020 in Bangladesh and India to select the characters. Besides many Bangladeshi actors, Soumya Jyoti, Tariq Anam Khan, Shamima Nazneen, and Jaya Ahsan were also at the audition. A draft cast list for the film was released on March 4, 2020. Arifin Shubo was one of the 15 actors shortlisted for the role of Bangabandhu, which was finalized after five auditions.
In an interview on why Arifin Shubo was cast in the lead role, the director replied that he was the right person. Jyotika Jyoti and Himi were initially confirmed as Sheikh Fazilatunnecha Mujib and Sheikh Hasina, respectively, but dropped later. Raonak Haasan was chosen for the role of Sheikh Kamal, but he was later dropped. Ferdous Ahmed was finalized for the position of Tajuddin Ahmed but was replaced by Riyaz due to visa issues.
